Ok, someone finally asked me " Why do you want to meditate, you are studying a martial art. " Fair enough question. Back in 1975 I got the idea that there was more to this than just doing endless forms. GM Wong taught me a meditation form. It was done sitting in a chair. There were not that many moves, and they were repeated 3 times each. The idea behind this form was to refrersh both your mind & your body. It worked ! Compulsive as I am , I wanted to take it further. This was a time when people wanted to learn astral projection and they wanted out of the body experiences, etc, etc... Chrystals were popular back then also. I always tried to stay away from whatever was popular , and whatever the masses wanted to learn. So.......... I joined the Theosophy Society .. They were on the right track, I was just on the wrong train ! It always gnawed at me that there was something more.......... Well, there is . The Buddhist form of Dhammakaya meditation was the right one for me. What am I getting from it ? I'm getting inner peace, and understanding of my own body. It has heightened my martial abilities . I have more awareness, more control, more sensitivity. Those that know me know that I have a dibilitating disease. I will eventually lose control of my legs and arms and then it will go to my heart and my lungs. I truly believe I have slowed it down enough so that I can live with it now. On my trip to Los Angeles this year I meditated on the plane . An 18 hour plane ride seemed like just a couple of hours. I got off the plane refreshed and ready to go . I never suffered one minute of jet lag ! Going back home was the same for me also. Again, those that know me told me that I seemed to be moving better and I had a more controlled strength. I also looked and felt younger. All I can tell you is " It works for me ." I know people are reading this forum, but nobody is asking questions or contributing........... Is it time to stop ? You tell me... Remember this... you can only go so far when you're offered a free ride .......

I feel good the next day after meditating before I go to sleep and I'm starting to get used to the half lotus better without much discomfort in my legs.

I would like to pass on to you what the Buddhist monks have passed on to me, so we will start here. I hope you can read into what is really meant from what they say.
" One of the most difficult jobs in the world to do is the job of teaching what is right and what is wrong . Because of that , whoever is able to teach us what is right should be someone we will always respect and pay homage to for our whole lives. "

" One can prevent from committing wrong judgement by not associating with those who are " Fools." One is planted with the right view when associating with the wise. He is able to maintain this by showing his respect, high praises, and adoration to those who are worthy of respect. "

It is certain that all living beings are , in the end , sentenced to die. If a prisoner were to go to his exectution with joy , he would be accused of insanity. Even though we all know that one day we will die , we are still careless and continue to conduct evil deeds . We are the ones who should ask ourselves : how much more of this insanity will we continue to carry out ? People fight each other for power and selfish gain . They behave the same as quarrelling chickens in a coop . Such unmeritorious acts should cease.
Ok , Before you think I have gone off the deep end , I should explain. These are quotes by the Monks or I should say, these are the thoughts of the Buddha that have been copied and preserved to present day. I personally find that these teachings apply not only to daily life , but to my kungfu training. Think about what was written and see where it applies in your training.
The easiest one to apply is the thought of associating with fools...We've all done it , and we have all known people who would be considered as such... I've had friends who have often times told me, " C'mon, you can train another day, one day off won't kill you ." Simple, but you can read into it in many ways.. This will get better , I promise. Remember, most of these monks I talk to are fighters ... They have learned to apply all these thoughts to their training also.... It can only make you a better person !
Please tell me your thoughts on this .

Humans are composed of body and mind. The body is controlled by the mind, which is the most significant componant . Mind is the fore-runner of everything. Mind is chief ; and everything is completed with the mind. Evil actions and speech are paid back with suffering. A metaphor exemplifying this fact is "Ox foot prints are always followed by cart wheels." If one speaks or acts with a pure mind, then happiness follows him as the shadow that never leaves his side . ( The Buddha's words in the Dhammapada 1 . ) It can be concluded that if we wish for happiness than we must abstain from unwholesomeness .
These thoughts are used in times when we are in position to be harmed. We allow the mind to guide our movements without thinking and we react with a opposing force without thought as to what sort of dammage we might inflict on the other person....This is not sparring... This is meant as a life or death situation.. I'm glad that most people here have never been in that kind of position... But,, What if you were ?

A human mind is something subtle, hard to be seen, and always immersed in cravings. Such cravings include: Struggling to satisfy lust. To be cunnung. Struggling to maintain one's self. Struggling to restrain and control one's self.
Though one does not smoke , drink , or is addicted to drugs , he is still high on life. One can be heavily drunk with the infatuation of youth , good health , and life . Attachment with such infatuations cannot attain genuine bliss. The more one intoxicates himself with alcohol or addiction to drugs, the more likely one is to perform evil deeds... ..
Not bad considering when this was written . Written BC ..At the time and from the Buddha.
I know many may disagree , but how many of us know people, friends , who are, were, habitual users of drugs , of all kinds . All that I have ever known are either dead or lead miserable lives with no happiness in sight........ Karma ? What do you think ?

I am a little confused by the last post. I think you are saying that "High on life is OK" but "high on drugs is not." It just seems a little confusing,
What was the source of the quote??
Thanks

High on life is great ! You create your own surroundings. You are in control of the people you wish to associate with, etc.. Our kung fu group has been together more or less for over 35 years.... I've often asked myself , " Why ?" Because we are for the most part , like minded people who have set a goal for ourselves... That goal just happened to turn into a lifestyle.
The source of the quote.......... As recorded from the teachings of the Buddha..........
But, look deeper into the meanings and see where it applies to your kung fu studies....... You'll find it !

Hi Gary
What about the breathing...you said not to worry about it but shouldn't you be conscious of it in some way...??

I would say that there is too much emphasis on breathing. Exert, breathe out. Recover, breathe in. Don't concentrate on it too much, just remember to do it , naturally ......... If the breathing stops , then you're in trouble !!

When I meditate , I summon my energy to the top of my head with my breath in, then I relax and I breathe out , and I push the energy down through my body until I am completely relaxed and then my breathing becomes slower and controlled automatically. The same principle works on techniques. In time of crisis or need , I do the same thing. I always get a kick ( No pun intended.) out of watching people spar.. All the bouncing around and all the coiled energy that is wasted on acticipation.... you can get tired just watching these people ....
