"PS. Hello to Skippy." Skip says "Hi" to all. He really enjoyed watching the workouts. The part he didn't care for was the long drive home. Now, he thinks twice when I ask his if he wants to go for a ride!!! Started training again with local KF teacher. Of course, it is an other style derived from Long Fist Shaolin and a mixture of other stuff. The teacher is OK with my wanting to work on my forms and not his AND... there is a wooden dummy waiting to play with me! ;-) Mic

Glad you guys made it home ok , and you have a place to work out ..... I think you have a better understanding of the forms than you thought you did. You have to remember to open up and let your body protect itself. It will............ Most people hold themselves in to sort of protect and then they can't maneouver because they hold themselves so tight. Relax.... Try it on the dummy..........Wooden, that is ..... The others don't live that close to you !

Hey Gary, I have seen reference to the Five Ancestor Style. Are they the same 5 family names as our style? Is there any connection between the Choy Li Fut of our style and the "other" more common Choy Lay Fat? Thanks, Jay

Should be ! But, the way things change and the way things are interpreted , who knows......... Line up ten people and sit them down and tell a joke to the first person and have it passed down the line and for sure the joke has lost all its meaning by the time it reaches the tenth person ! Go figure ....

Hi Gary, I found this info on the web about 5 Ancestors Fist which is much different than 5 Family Style:
Five Ancestors Fist The original martial art from Fujian, China
The Five Ancestors Fist (a.k.a Five Ancestors He Yang Fist) is one of the seven great fists of Fujian province. It is one of the most popular fist styles of Min Nan region (south of the Min River). There are many different sayings about the Five Ancestors Fist, two of which are the most controversial: (1) Five Ancestors Fist is the name of the combination of these five fist styles: White Crane (Bai He), Monkey (Hou), Arhat (Luo Han), Bodhidarma (Da Zun) and Great Ancestor (Tai Zu). (2) Five Ancestors Fist is the result of the rearrangement and reorganization by Cai Yu Ming of the aforementioned 5 fist styles plus the addition of the Mysterious Female Fist (which Cai learned later on) to form a new fist style which has distinct features that are different from the original five fists. The above two statements are both correct. However, we must still differentiate between the two because the contents are not entirely the same. One states that it is the term of the combined fist forms. The other states that it is the result of the refinement of the 5 combined fist styles to make a new fist style. This new style became a traditional martial art from Min Nan that has spread throughout South East Asia. Five Ancestors Fist is also known as Five Ancestors He Yang Fist, named after the master He Yang. The basic rule of discipline is: Cultivation of the body and character is the foundation of being successful in learning the art, therefore they are cultivated simultaneously.

Hi Gary, Did Ark Wong ever speak of his teachers? Did you ever see a list of them besides Monk Pang? If Lau Bun was a senior classmate of Ark Wong, did they have the same curriculum? Did Ark Wong know the same Choy Lee Fat that Lau Bun taught? And if Lau Bun learned Five Family style, I wonder why he didn't teach that. Are there any forms the same between Five Family and Choy Lay Fut if they had the same teachers? It is interesting to know more of our lineage. Jay

Even though some students had the same teachers some of the teachings were different so that what a teacher knew could be taught in entirety to different students. Size and shape dictated what a teacher taught to a student along with different students personalities. Look at our class and look at the different interpretations of the same forms.. There is a right way, middle of the road and then you have a interpretation of what a movement is according to the way it would be used by the student who is showing it to someone else. Sometimes things change. Whether we like it or not !

Hi All,
I wrote Grandmaster Doc Fai Wong (of Choy li fut) and asked about Lau Bun and Ark Wong. (Lau Bun was one of Doc Fai Wong's sifus). DFW (respectfully for short) wrote that Lau Bun didn't talk to him about Ark and he in Choy li fut. DFW did not know of any of Ark's sifus either.
DFW did mention that Lau Bun learned the "five animal form" from his sifu's wife. Choy li fut has the small and large 5 animal form and also the small and large 10 animal form. I don't think the original large 5 animal form was actually considered a CLF form but was adopted to the system later. I have no idea about the other 3 forms I mentioned. I have seen the version of the large 5 animal form and it does not have many of the charateristic CLF techniques but is a good form nonetheless.
Now to my point/question...I wonder if the four forms listed above have any roots with Ark's 5F system? Ark's 5F system has 3 "five animal five family" forms in it. Do any of these three resemble those in CLF?...or maybe some of them are the same forms in CLF?
Just food for thought and hungry minds wanting to know... :-)
Jeff
