Hi Guys. I boxed Golden Gloves at age 16 in New York City . My trainer was a man named Charlie Goldman. Charlie Goldman was Rocky Marciano's trainer and I got to meet him a couple of times at Stillmans gym in Manhattan where I trained.. As tough as all these guys were they were the nicest guys you could ever meet. They would go out of their way to help you with anything. They would give you advice and just like GM Wong, if you didn't listen , that was where you stopped ! I got into palm training a very long time ago and strengthened it more at GM Wong's. I personnally found that all in all it made my training better. I also find that I much prefer open hand striking. I find that my reactions are faster and my blocks are stronger and I can hit harder with an open hand than with a closed fist. A fist is used for certain technique , so your fist training shouldn't be ignored . Always remember Yin & Yang. You can't have one without the other.

Hey Guys, I thought I would chime in on Steeve's last post... First, I wouldn't write off any 135-140 pound guys yet...I know some lightly built guys that can hit hard!!! On the other hand, if you're over 200 pounds and know how to hit, it might hurt worse than (if hit in exactly the same spot) the lighter built guys...Food for thought. Also, how big or small you are, or how light or heavy you are is not always an indicator of how much punishment a person can endure. Some skinny guys can take loads of punishment. I have fought guys much heavier than me (I'm around 205 pounds and in great shape) and much stockier who can be dropped or can't take punches anywhere. No pain threshold. BTW...those were matches not streetfights...I'm really pretty melow and don't want to give out the wrong impression. My point is that it depends on the individual and what punishment they are willing to endure and overcome. Not what they weigh or how big they are. :-) Let's face it, when the target presents itself, and assuming we hit that target...a person will drop after a hit to the throat or any other stike to the critical area. Big or small, we all have nerves in the body and we hurt pretty much the same way... The moral of the story is don't let big opponents intimidate you for any reason...and don't get a big head when facing smaller opponents either...Bottom line is to avoid the fight period(heck RUN, bite, whatever it takes), but if you can't get out of it, then don't get all caught up in physical size either. Appearances are always (nearly) what they seem to be. ;-) Don't let size in either direction intimidate you...You have to keep your mind thinking (heck, KNOWING) that you're going to win and come out in breat shape...whether you're in a streetfight or fighting in a match. Okay...I've beaten a dead horse...Hope this helps! Jeffro

Okay...I guess I'm not finished yet ... :-)
Don't assume that a big guy isn't fast either (for that matter, don't let age fool you either)...Big mistake (no pun intended). If the big guy is slow...good deal for you for sure...finish him! You'll be home early for dinner! But if he's quick and you assumed he wasn't....it's gonna be a long day for you! ;-)

Jeffro thats remind me someone pobably Jethro tull ;D Ur f**kin Right.....but in reality if you take a big guys versus a small guys ....the smaall guys have to have more skill to kick the ass of the big guy....THe big guy is a bear the small guy is a Rabbit ...... Here the story of the bear try to eat the rabbit if you fight me im the rabbit...ur the bear.....because your big ....u try to grab me to send me to the ground to immobilize me and finish me ........Me I try to hit you for takedown ....maybe in my situation since im very good and 205 lbs dont bother me ;D I close the range and throw you ;D....but if you know how to fight you have a lot of physical attribute About Punisment ur right some small rabbit could take more hit of the the big bear.... But better to be the rabbit and the bear in one.... Steeve

Hey Steeve, I really never think which animal I'm more suited for. I love them all. So many movements are similar throughout each animal. Once I sparred with a Tae Kwon Do guy who tried to kick me full force to the head...I thought it was going to be friendly.... I turned my head and watched the foot go by and then proceeded to charge him with the Tiger. I backed him up to the corner of the room and stopped with my hand in front of his face. The point is that one might assume tiger is for big guys. As Jeff said, our body size doesn't matter if we know what we are doing and hit our opponent in the right place. Doing forms correctly does that for you. In a real situation we will react and not think about what move we are going to use. How tall are you Steeve? I am five foot ten and a half inches tall. I also did iron skin training for awhile back and could take hits pretty good. Jay

Nobody is invincible Steeve and I made no claims about iron skin training being so. Just because you haven't done it don't put it down. Check with Gary about it. He was the one who taught me.

The best example of size not mattering is seen here in Thailand every day. In the bar area where the tourists hang out there are many complexes where there are rings set up and they put on staged Muay Thai matches nightly for tourists.. Well, after a few drinks there are those who feel they are much better at boxing than the Thais. That is when the betting starts and the big Farang ( Foreigner ) will get in the ring with the soaking wet 125 lb Thai boxer. 3 rounds, 2 will go to the favor of the foreigner and then in the third round after all the bets are covered, the Thai will proceed to kick the butt of the poor guy and leave him a slobbering mess in the middle of the ring............. GM Wong was not very big either...
Iron skin training is a must when you learn iron palm.
